In modern urban residences, especially in small apartments in places like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan, door selection often presents a challenge. Traditional swing doors, when fully opened, allow convenient passage but require a significant amount of indoor space, which limits furniture placement. Sliding doors, while saving indoor space, only provide a limited clearance when opened (usually only 1/2 to 2/3 of the door opening), making passage less convenient.
Faced with this dilemma, the PdVS team, with ten years of experience in aluminum door and window research and manufacturing, was determined to innovate. They aimed to create a new type of door that would neither occupy extra indoor space nor limit the full clearance of the door opening, providing customers with efficient and flexible space solutions.
Development Timeline
2004: PdVS officially established a new product R&D team in Singapore, focusing on the concept design of the flat-push door. Within one year, the team continuously optimized the structure on drawings, integrating innovative ideas combining the functions of both swing and sliding doors.
2005: The technical team traveled to Foshan, China, to source aluminum profiles and hardware samples for the first prototype assembly. Due to material tolerances and structural complexity, the team went through nearly a year of repeated adjustments to refine the design.
2006: After multiple rounds of testing and improvements, the commercial design of the flat-push door was completed in April 2006, and the product was officially launched in July under the name “pd Door.” After 18 months of dedicated R&D, the pd door broke the traditional limitations, marking a milestone from concept to market-ready product.
2018: The Foshan R&D and manufacturing center was established in China.
2025: The Shijiazhuang branch factory in China was launched.
Naming and Design Inspiration
During the R&D process, an engineer noticed that when the two door panels were pushed together, their top view resembled the closely fitting letters “p” and “d.” This sparked the team’s inspiration to name the product “pd Door.” This unique name not only reflects creativity but also symbolizes PdVS’s pursuit of space optimization and quality living.
The original design intention of the pd door was to break the limitations of traditional doors and, while ensuring aesthetics and functionality, offer a door and window solution with extremely high space utilization.
